The ISM Services Employment Index stayed in contraction at 47.8% in August 2026 even as the headline services PMI expanded at 55.4% and demand hit a multiyear high. Services firms are absorbing demand without adding headcount - the narrowest remaining channel through which the growth leg of the stagflation thesis is still live, and the direct counterweight to the strong payroll print.
