Core PPI, excluding food and energy, rose 0.2% in August against a 0.3% forecast - softer-than-expected pipeline pressure in the measure the Committee weights most for underlying trend. This is the first genuinely disinflationary surprise in the data since the Jackson Hole keynote, and the reason a dovish hold on September 16 remains live despite the headline.
